Making Space for Yourself

A moment of stillness. A quiet invitation.
A guide to getting what you need.

What if self-care wasn’t selfish?
What if it was the beginning of your contribution?

The Story Behind the Book

I co-created this book with my dear friend Bernie.
He was a retired economist, and an elder with the same Jersey humor I grew up with. At our weekly lunches, we talked about social justice, the weight of the world, and the courage it takes to take care of yourself—first.
(A totally foreign concept to me.)

Because we were so different (and many decades apart in age), we asked each other the kinds of questions that made us stop and think. And disagree. And kvetch. And eventually come around to a new understanding of something we thought we already knew.

This book grew out of those conversations.

This book is for :

It’s for teachers, bodyworkers, helpers, parents, elders, creatives, and caretakers of all kinds. It’s for anyone navigating change, grief, or just the complexity of being human.

The ones doing too much. The ones carrying the invisible load. The ones standing on opposite sides of an issue, who still want to find the place where we all belong.

A Book That Gives Back.

10% of every sale goes to The Corrymeela Community—an organization devoted to building peace through brave conversations in Ireland, Palestine, Israel, and around the world.

Because healing doesn’t happen in isolation.
Because peace starts small.

What's inside?

This isn’t a book you race through.
It’s the kind you sit with. Come back to.

Bernie Kemp

 Artist & Illustrator       Author & Wisdom-giver

Bernie and I were unlikely friends. He was in his 80s when we met. I was in my 20s. But we clicked over our Jersey roots, a shared love of good food, and a deep curiosity about what makes life meaningful.

We had lunch often. I’d show up fired up about injustice, the environment, capitalism—and Bernie, ever the economist (and Pete Seeger fan), would fill in the gaps. Market manipulation. Corporate control. Lobbying. Opportunity costs.

But underneath it all, (preferencing everything he'd say with an emphatic "honey!" before continuing,)

Economics is really about how we use our energy. And just like the earth, we only have so much to give before we burn out.

Bernie reminded me to rest. To pause. To resource myself before trying to save the world.

And even though he had decades on me, he never stopped learning. He listened. He let me challenge his thinking—and challenged mine right back.

This book grew out of those conversations.

Bernie passed in 2023, but his presence is in every page.
Making Space for Yourself is our offering for anyone who’s ready to slow down, take a breath, and remember they matter.

with peace and love,

Erin and Bernie
